Photo Gallery | PHOTOS: PETA Protests Circus Treatment Of Elephants In Front Of Kids At Verizon Center

Today the inevitable took place in front of the Verizon Center in Chinatown: PETA protested the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus show.

Showcasing signs claiming animal cruelty on behalf of the circus, PETA also had members dress up as wounded elephants.

“PETA wants to make sure that people who pay to attend Ringling Brothers Circus in Washington, D.C. know that they’re going to see animals that are suffering,” said Katie Arth, a PETA campaign leader.

When asked whether she thought it was appropriate to be protesting in front of the children Arth said, “If kids saw the cruelty that happens to these elephants...chained (up), they can’t comfortably turn around, they’d have to be dragged to the circus, kicking and screaming.  It’s up to us to speak up for these animals.”
