Local D.C. soccer fanatics rallied at Laughing Man Tavern in Downtown today to watch the semi-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Newly Signed Capitals Player Jeff Halpern Speaks to Media at Kettler Capitals Iceplex

 

The Washington Capitals made newly signed center Jeff Halpern available to the media this afternoon at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

“I’ve always have hoped to come back to Washington and the fact that they called…I was ecstatic,” said Halpern.

According to the NHL:

 Halpern, 35, played 438 games for the Capitals from 1999-2006 and captained the team during the 2005-06 season. The 5’11”, 198-pound center has recorded 214 points (87 goals, 127 assists) in his career with Washington, including a career-high 46 points (19 goals, 27 assists) during the 2003-04 season.

 

 

DPR Announces Independence Day Weekend and Furlough Day Schedule

 

This announcement comes to us from DC Department of Parks and Recreation:

The DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) has announced the following schedule in observance of the Independence Day holiday weekend and furlough day on Monday, July 4, 2011.

Recreation and Community Centers
All DPR recreation centers will be closed on Monday, July 4.
DPR summer camps will not be in session on Monday, July 4.

Pools and Spray Parks
All DPR outdoor and indoor swimming pools will follow their normal schedule on Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3, 2011.

On Monday, July 4th, all indoor aquatic facilities will be closed. 7 outdoor pools will be open 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm, (list below).

On Saturday, June 18, thirty-five young racers took to the streets of DC for the 70th Annual Greater Washington Soap Box Derby, sponsored by the Washington Area New Automobile Dealers Association.

Now, three of them hold the title of Local Champion and will head to Akron, Ohio, to represent the District of Columbia at the All- American Soap Box Derby International Championships on July 23, 2011.

Progress Being Made In Women's Sports?

The Washington Mystics held a luncheon for sponsors and media Tuesday, June 28 at the Verizon Center, to celebrate the WNBA's fifteenth year of existence, and the team's fourteenth season in the league.

We asked Alana Beard and Crystal Langhorne of the Mystics, and WNBA President, Laurel Richie, where the league currently stands and about how much progress has been made in American women's sports to date.

Registration is now open for the summer season of DC Bocce!  Bocce is a great recreational sport, that can be easily enjoyed by people of all ages, genders, and skill sets equally.   And the fun doesnt stop on the field, the league has sponsored happy hours at a nearby bar, with food and drink specials, after each match.

DC Bocce is a fun outdoor summer activity. It really is the perfect mix of competition, networking, mingling and partying.

There are locations in Adams Morgan, Ballston, Capitol Hill, Columbia Heights & Dupont Circle.  Games are once a week and run from mid July to early September
