Favorite Friday's: Favorite Workout Spot
Favorite Friday's: Favorite Workout Spot

Start with ballet, add a dash of yoga, a pinch of Pilates core work and more body sculpting and you've got the ingredients to my favorite workout so far: The Bar Method.

Last weekend I decided to venture out of my comfort zone of boot camp and chisel classes and check out the much talked about hot spot for a good workout which recently opened in Chinatown.

It's $10 dollars for the first class and then $125 for the 30 day unlimited new client special which is cost effective if you go
six times in the 30 days, (pricey but worth it).

I had the best experience at this class. The women were so friendly and the instructors, Kate and Maria were awesome.  It was the first workout I've had that I actually felt an extreme burn and my legs were shaking uncontrollably (in a good way). The studio is immaculate, the music was perfect for the workout and I left feeling energized, and happy with a better posture!

This non-impact fat-burning format of interval training with muscle-shaping isometrics to quickly and safely reshape the entire body. Its non-impact, which is great for those with knee problems. The one-hour workout targets all major muscle groups and improves posture. Definitely a must try if you are bored with your normal workout routine and looking to tone.

Sidenote: Kelly Osbourne told US Weekly she recently dropped 42 lbs. with the help of the Bar Method routines.

Other workouts worth checking out:

  • Down Dog Yoga: Down Dog’s heated vinyasa flow offers a dynamic combination of strength, sweat and spirituality. It's much more about physical practice rather than the spiritual one which I liked. Classes are challenging, and interesting and the studio is very clean. If you are looking for a yoga studio that will whip you into shape while challenging you ( at $18/class), Down Dog is one of the best in the area.
  • Tranquil Space: They now have Yoga 1 classes every day of the week, which I appreciate, as they tend to be the most crowded.
-Great deal for newbies like me.  Their classes are well structured, level 1, 2, Open and they offer a real restorative yoga class on the weekend.  The instructors are well seasoned and offer adjustments, especially on their Level 1 students which I feel is the most important part of learning the differences in yoga poses. Immerse yourself into an introductory month of unlimited Tranquil Space yoga for only $50 dollars.
  • GTown Bootcamp: Classes are held twice weekly — Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 to 6:55 am at the intersection of Potomac & K/Water Street NW, right at the entrance of the Georgetown Waterfront Park. From there, the class hits all the high points of Georgetown, like the park, Cady’s Alley, Exorcist Steps, the bottom of K Street, etc. The
monthly fee is $100 but to drop in is $15 dollars. This is the best, most complete exercise routine I have done in a long time. Each day, a new location and different focus in regards to muscle group and cardio exercises which keeps you on your toes. I also prefer to workout in the morning during the time that I or the general public would normally be sleeping so 6 a.m. is perfect!
  • Bikram Yoga: Lady Gaga obsesses over Bikram. This studio is one of the best. Clean, fresh, and welcoming. For those who are new to hot yoga, Bikram Yoga is the hottest you'll find. Getting used to the heat is part of the battle, but after you've adjusted, you'll be addicted to the 100 degree temperature. You will do a series of 26 yoga poses. Each pose is done twice and is held for a certain length of time. Each Bikram session begins and ends with breathing exercises which assist in your movements by warming your muscles, increasing sweat to help rid your body of toxins, and allowing you to move deeper into each pose.  What I specifically love about the Bethesda studio is the community vibe. You can choose the unlimited yoga for 11 days at $33 dollars or the 33 day yoga package for $99 dollars.
