D.C. filmmaker Jason Baustin differs from his area counterparts in one important regard: He's not from around here. Jason moved to the D.C. area from Atlanta, Georgia to study Film and Digital Media at American University after some friends had told him about the program. After graduating, he decided to stay in the D.C. area to make films rather than opting for the oft chosen destinations of New York and Los Angeles.

Interior Visions

Interior Visions

For over two decades, Mona Hajj has been designing interiors that combine global vision with an emphasis on elegance, comfort, and simplicity. Named one of Architectural Digest's top 100 designers and architects, Hajj's interiors are colorful, textural, and abundantly livable. Her distinctly original and internationally influenced aesthetic is evidenced by her use of culturally and historically diverse adornments such as Persian rugs, Flemish tapestries, Japanese screens, Italian chandeliers, and Chinese chargers. On this evening, Hajj discusses select projects showcased in her book, Interior Visions (Random House, 2011), including a beach house in Delaware, a New York City apartment, the Embassy of Luxembourg here in Washington, D.C., and even her own home in Baltimore. Encouraging American Genius and Other Tales from the Front

On this enlightening evening of art and history, join Sarah Cash, Bechhoefer Curator of American Art, as she presents some of the highlights, discoveries, and behind-the-scenes stories documented in the Corcoran's new book and online catalogue, Corcoran Gallery of Art: American Paintings to 1945. This extensive volume and searchable database represent the first catalogue to be published in over 40 years for the Corcoran's distinguished collection of historic American paintings. The talk will trace the collection from its origin in the private holdings of Washington banker and philanthropist William Wilson Corcoran to the establishment of his namesake museum. A light reception and book signing follow the talk. To purchase a copy of the catalogue, please visit http://shop.corcoran.org/products/corcoran-gallery-of-art-american-paintings-to-1945

Tomorrow, Tuesday March 15, filmmaker Kevin Smith will be presenting his new film Red State at the Warner Theater. Smith, famous for comedic films like Clerks and Chasing Amy as well as being the quiet half of Jay and Silent Bob, departs from his usual humorous territory to dabble in horror. Red State centers around characters inspired by Westboro Baptist Church and its founder, Fred Phelps. Westboro Baptist has achieved national infamy for its controversial protests at the funerals of U.S. servicemen.
