CityDance Opens New Theater, Announces Exciting Partnership with Christopher K. Morgan & Artists

CityDance announces the opening of the CityDance Studio Theater at Strathmore and its partnership with Christopher K. Morgan & Artists as its first Resident Dance Company. The theater and the residency advance CityDance’s commitment to the creation, curation and presentation of innovative professional dance, an integral part of CityDance’s mission throughout its 15-year history.

In partnering with Christopher K. Morgan & Artists, CityDance is building on its longstanding relationship with choreographer Christopher K. Morgan.  Morgan, who has been a vital part of the organization for over four years, served as the Choreographer in Residence and Rehearsal Director of CityDance Ensemble until the professional company disbanded in June 2011.

“I’m thrilled with the opportunity CityDance is giving me to deeply focus on my creative process through this Residency.  Having spent the last four years in the excitement and demands of the repertory dance company model, I look forward to turning inward to focus solely on the art that I’m inspired to create,” says Morgan of the partnership.

CityDance will provide Morgan and his newest endeavor, Christopher K. Morgan & Artists, with rehearsal and performance space at Strathmore and will present the Company in the DC area and the surrounding region. As the resident company, Christopher K. Morgan & Artists will also provide the students of CityDance’s Conservatory and School, as well as thousands of students who benefit from CityDance’s free Early Arts community programs, with access to professional dance.

CityDance Executive Director Alexe Nowakowski adds, ”We’ve developed this innovative partnership to continue to bring high-quality professional dance to the DC area – and to provide both our students and the greater community with profound artistic experiences and ground breaking, high-level professional art. There really couldn’t be a more exciting way to kickoff our inaugural Season in our [CityDance’s] new state-of-the-art Black Box Theater.”

CityDance unveils its new Black Box Theater at the Music Center at Strathmore on November 18, with Reveal, an evening of Morgan’s work that includes a World Premiere Collaboration between Christopher K. Morgan, Composer Ignacio Alcover and Photographer Kay Chernush; a reprise of Tarantella; a World Premiere solo performed by Morgan; and a special performance of Morgan's 2002 work Ties That Bind, which will feature students from the award-winning CityDance Conservatory. Reveal will run three nights, beginning Friday, November 18 through Sunday, November 20.
